File Sharing

File Sharing File sharing makes the file system of another host appear as if it were part of the local file system. File sharing is so common and important that servers implementing this function given the name file servers.

File sharing is one of the most system-dependent networking functions. For UN*X systems, NFS is the predominate file sharing protocol. Microsoft systems with builtin network support use LAN Manager, for which Samba provides a free software UN*X server. Novell NetWare is an important competitor.
